Let’s be honest – when the sun’s shining, you want to be outside making the most of it, not spending hours in front of the mirror perfecting pesky liquid liner. Luckily designers favoured a less-is-more approach to beauty for SS12…and we couldn’t be happier. Think of summer-flushes, fresh-from-the-fields and wholesome beauty and look to Giles Deacon, Christopher Kane and Diane Von Furstenberg for inspiration.
The key to quick, barely-there looks is products. Sometimes when creating ‘the natural look’, you end up using more than you would for full-blown party looks, so scale back you make-up bag and embrace a little minimalism. At Proenza Schouler, make-up artist Diane Kendal used concealer, powder and blush, leaving lips and eyes bare, and it was a similar story at Christopher Kane, where mascara and lipstick was a no-no, and the resultant fresh-faced flush is a look we’ll be trying to emulate.
If leaving the house sans lippy and smoky eyes brings you out in a cold sweat (it happens to us all) adopt a more feminine, summer-friendly stance with soft smudgy pink eyeshadows (that work more like a highlighter) and just apply mascara to the upper lashes – as seen on the catwalk at Valentino. You just need to perfect that messy-but-romantic French plait and you’re good to go.
