Trend Alert SS12: Ottoman Empire

By  January 17, 2012

This Spring Summer, get ready to embrace the exotic, heady appeal of the Ottoman Empire and add a touch of luxury and decadence to your wardrobe. The perfect attire for sultry evenings or casual day-trips, the catwalk offered up a wealth of mystical inspiration that was a direct evolution of Yves Saint Lauren’s most iconic shows. At YSL, Stefano Pilati was in a nostalgic mood, opting for sultry Eastern-inspired prints that mixed a touch of decadence with laid-back summer dressing. Haider Ackermann and Margiela were thinking along a similar line with luxe silks, slouchy silhouettes, rich tapestry patterns and warm, jewel colour palettes

The theme also cropped up at Isabel Marant (think heavily bead and mirror embellished jackets), Pucci (printed maxi skirts) and Thakoon (pretty paisley print sundresses). These looks found their richness in considered details and a few well-appointed accessories (jewel coloured clutches, woven crucfixes or a jaunty summer hat) that complemented the low-key exoticism.

If you’re stuck or inspiration, look back to the Seventies, as this look is a modern re-mix of Bianca Jagger, Ali MacGraw, Iman and Diane Von Furstenberg’s classic style.

A word of warning: flares are not required.
