Trend Alert SS12: Great Gatsby

By  January 17, 2012

It’s the most anticipated film of 2012, and designers are already taking style cues from Daisy Buchanan and the Roaring Twenties…get set for Gatsby fever! Gucci took the decade literally, with drop waist shift dresses, Art Deco derived motifs, trailing fringing and sequin shimmer galore, but avoided an all-out retro revival with punchy graphic prints and structured tailoring.

There was a similar, albeit more feminine vibe at Ralph Lauren, who clashed marabou feathers with diamante encrusted maxi dresses and a faded pastel palette.  Lauren knows his way round the decade – having designed the costumes for the original Robert Redford/Mia Farrow film. Throwing wallpaper florals, bias cut dresses, silk slouchy pyjama trousers and fringed bags into the mix, the designer has summer wedding dressing covered. For those who prefer a more minimalist approach, new design talent J.JS Lee is the name to know. Simple, midi-length Flapper dresses worked a more androgynous angle, and were a considered blend of luxe and simplicity.

If beauty is more your thing, spritz on some Chanel No. 5 (the fragrance was launched in 1921) and smear lips with a classic red Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Ultra Gold Lipstick (another Flapper fave)….and you’re good to go.
