A relatively recent – and very welcome – addition to our wardrobes has been the utility shirt and if there’s one brand that’s synonymous with this most versatile of garments, it’s Equipment. Their silky shirts come in a veritable rainbow of shades, many feature their distinctive pockets on the chest and recently they’ve started introducing playful prints and trompe l’oeil effects which have gone down particularly well with the editors, bloggers and models who see an Equipment shirt as a style staple (Miranda Kerr seems to be particularly addicted.) The fantastic thing about a utility shirt is that is fills that awkward gap between 'smart' and 'relaxed', somehow ingeniously managing to tick both boxes at the same time. It's all thanks to the combination of a luxurious fabric like silk or chiffon plus the classic, tailored shape. You can wear it to smarten up your jeans (with the sleeves scrunched up for added cool points) or to add a chic edge to a pencil skirt. Essentially it's the ultimate outfit saver. You’ll never regret investing in an Equipment shirt but if you want something a little more affordable there are plenty of equivalents to be found on the high street and online. Look for jewel-bright shades and interesting details – pleats, embellishment on the collar or pockets – and wear tucked into high-waisted jeans, cocktail trousers or your favourite mini.
