Alberta Ferretti is always on her best form when she sticks to her bottom line: pretty, feminine dresses beautifully embellished for the woman who likes to make a statement without going over the top. This season was no exception. A giant screen serving as runway backdrop flashed watery images of waves and bubbles alerting guests that Signora Ferretti dove underwater for this season's inspiration. But with Ferretti, the designer's DNA is always more dominant than that of the inspiration, and so, unlike Donatella's mermaid collection of the previous spring/summer season for Versace, if you stripped away the backdrop and separated the girls rather than showing them all together, the watery reference would be all too easy to overlook. It began with shell-like creatures appearing in fringe and tiered chiffon dresses oyster in colour, but dazzling like precious pearls embellished with matte and shiny shingles that perfectly replicated the iridescence of the inside of a shell. They soon gave way to kelp-like tones of brown, organza and chiffon dresses that swirled around their models' bodies like the algae waving in its underwater forests. Then came the ode to the ocean with various shades of blue dresses for both day, cocktail and evening, watery prints on soft chiffon or slickly sheened ocean blue satin. The finale presented us with romantic, modern mermaids. Intricately crafted floor-sweeping gowns overlaid with crystallized netting (the mermaid caught up by and or with the handsome fisherman), high-wrought nude lace on nude chiffon echoing patterns in the sand complete with fishtail trains.
