Every season Karl Lagerfeld transforms the Grand Palais into a magical, no expense spared wonderland and this season was no different. Somehow managing every time to surpass himself, Lagerfeld created a white under the sea fantasia for spring/summer 2012 with Florence Welch singing live from a shell, her words “Let the water take me” making us lose ourselves in the moment. The underwater theme was evident in every look; the models passed each other from all directions as if they were beautiful fish – but fish holding desirable sea shell clutches and adorned with pearls in their hair and delicately placed on the back of their necks.
Metallic classic Chanel suits shimmered as if they were a reflection in the sea, ostrich feathers made for perfect fishtails while sequin dresses or gathered chiffon billowing in the wind looked like fish gills gliding through the water. This was a delicate, cleverly constructed collection with a lightness to it that was almost couture. Tulle, lace, puff sleeves that looked like seawood and chiffon ripples made that lightness possible but it was totally wearable too – beautiful jackets with cut out backs teamed with gorgeous lamé skirts and sequinned pieces that rippled in the light as if they were fish scales.
