It was the moment Spice fans around the world were waiting for, and when it arrived, it was just like being back in the nineties…
Even before they arrived on stage, the Spice Girls were the talk of the London 2012 Olympic Closing Ceremony.
Twitter was abuzz with Tweets encouraging the girls out of their dressing rooms and onto the global stage (us included); while the crowd eagerly watched all stage entrance and exit points, waiting for Posh, Baby, Sporty, Scary and Ginger to burst into the stadium.
Burst they did not; but zoom them did. Each riding a black cab, the famous five-some transported the crowds back to the nineties as they unleashed sequins, union jacks, sparkles, manes of hair and a massive amount of of girl power; the Spice Girls were back!
But what did they wear? The most fashion obsessed, Victoria Beckham, lived up to her nickname in a bespoke Giles Deacon gown – it flapped dramatically in the wind behind, as her cab whizzed around the stadium.
Mel B channelled the evening’s earlier performer Jessie J in a sparkly catsuit from Zuhair Murad. In short, it did all the swaggering that her caged platform did not allow!
As for Sporty, she also transported her nineties look back to the present day in a simple combo: a cropped jersey top and side-split trousers.
Geri, aka Ginger, sadly did not collect her infamous Union Jack dress from the archives (sigh), however the mum-of-one did nod to her past in a red dress. As she did her thing, the British flag bounced behind on a bustle. a
Baby Spice sported a more grown-up version of her youth in pink sequinned dress with Star Trek-esque shoulder detailing by designer Maggie Cooke.
It might be 18 years after the girls first united, however they’ve still go it in our books! GIRL POWER!
